NBA Analytics & MIT Sports Business Conference

The Sports Guy had Daryl Morey (GM of the Rockets) on his podcast last week and they talked about the MIT Sports Analytic Conference.  Kevin, Mark and I went last year and it was great.  Looks like they got even more heavy hitters this year - Simmons, Cuban, several GMs.  Maybe next year we check it out as well.

At the end he asked Morey where he thought the next great niche was and Morey said he thought the basketball analytics was pretty well covered so the next big thing is finding something new to analyze or interpret.  Maybe finding a better way to analyze MMA or decifering how performance in the European leagues will translate to the NBA or something is the next big thing.

  1. Thanks for posting something on this. I listened to this last night after the game. Did anyone else notice the potshots Simmons and Morey were taking a Cuban during this? One was pretty clear when they were talking about Cuban making up statistics that proved J-Kidd was the 2nd best player in the league and basically said Cuban was doing more harm than good to the basketball statistical revolution. I'll listen to it again and pull the full quotes.

Mark, I would love to get your thoughts on this too since you went to this conference (was it last year or the year before).

  2. Sorry, I missed that all 3 of you guys went last year...thanks for the invite by the way (j/k). I did like Simmons calling Morey "Dork Elvis", but I always figured "Dork Elvis" was Bill James...maybe Morey is like "Dork McCartney"
